MCE OF YKMA COMMISSIONS COMMUNITY SEED BANK AT ABREWANKOR
On Monday, January 26,2026, the Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, joined the Chiefs and Queens of Abrewankor, NUS Network Ghana and its partners and donors to commission a beautiful edifice to conserve indigenous seeds for the future that will empower farmers to secure crop diversity
The Chairman of the event, Nene Addey Tetteh I, the chief of Abrewankor, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to NUS Network Ghana and its partners for choosing Abrewankor as a site to erect this unprecedented project in the Municipality.
Dr. Daniel Nyadanu, the NUS Network Ghana Coordinator, stated that the Abrewankor community seed bank is the second seed bank to be opened in Ghana, but it has been upscaled. He added that the first seed bank was inaugurated in Mangoase in Akuapem North Municipality in the Eastern Region. He outlined the modern ways of conserving crops on the farm and sustaining seeds for posterity at the seed bank. He expressed his appreciation to donors and partners such as the Netherlands Embassy in Ghana, Anton Jurgens Fonds, Bioversity International & CIAT, and Ghana Food Movement.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, emphasized that access to quality seeds is fundamental to food security and eradication of hunger. He continued that the seed bank will contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s commitment towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 2.
He outlined the following among others as the key objectives of the Abrewankor Community Seed Bank Project:
✅Preservation and protection of indigenous seeds from extinction
✅Improvement of access to quality planting materials
✅Promotion of climate-smart agriculture
✅Crop Biodiversity Security
✅Seeds affordability.
In concluding his remarks, he thanked NUS Network Ghana and its partners, and called on farmers, traditional authorities, farmer-based organizations, and all stakeholders to work together to protect and manage the facility as a shared community asset.
The Agric Director of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Mr. Benjamin Bortey Alabi,spoke extensively about the health benefits of consuming indigenous foods. He added that the conservation of indigenous seeds at the community seed bank complements the theme used for the celebration of 41st National Farmers’ day in December 2025, “FEED GHANA, EAT GHANA, SECURE THE FUTURE.”
The Chairman of the Abrewankor Community Seed Bank, Mr. Daniel Tetteh, expressed his enthusiasm and appreciation to NUS Network Ghana and its partners and donors for establishing the seed bank facility in Abrewankor. He appealed for computers to electronically keep records, motorbike and tricycle(aboboyaa) to ply non-motorable farm roads for the collection of seeds. He also appealed for gari processing machines to provide job opportunities for the residents and also to avoid post harvest losses.
In his closing remarks, the chairman of the occasion, the chief of Abrewankor, Nene Addey Tetteh I, reiterated his sincerest appreciation to NUS Network Ghana and its partners and donors for the beautiful project that will secure the future against the extinction of indigenous crops.
