The Works Department is responsible for coordinating and implementing policies relating to works and infrastructure development within the Municipality. The Department provides technical advice to the Assembly and supports the planning, construction, maintenance, and supervision of public infrastructure to ensure safe and functional environments for residents.

Core Responsibilities

The Works Department performs the following key functions:

Policy Implementation and Advisory Services

  • Facilitates the implementation of works-related policies and reports on such activities to the Assembly
  • Provides technical advice to the Assembly on matters relating to works, infrastructure, and building safety

Roads, Drains, and Infrastructure

  • Facilitates the construction, repair, and maintenance of:

  • Public roads, including feeder roads

  • Drains along streets in major settlements within the Municipality

  • Advises on the prohibition of unauthorised excavation, including burrow pits and unsafe well construction

Development Control and Public Safety

  • Advises and encourages owners of buildings and premises to:

  • Remove dilapidated structures in public spaces

  • Paint, whitewash, or colour-wash the exterior of buildings

  • Tidy premises and remove derelict vehicles or objects that constitute a nuisance

  • Provides technical advice on machinery layout and building designs to facilitate fire safety, rescue operations, and emergency management

Public Buildings and Facilities

  • Encourages and facilitates the maintenance of public buildings and facilities
  • Assists in the construction, equipping, maintenance, and closure of markets, and ensures that trading structures are confined to designated market areas
  • Assists in maintaining public buildings, including offices, residential accommodation, and ancillary structures

Project Inspection and Supervision

  • Assists in inspecting projects undertaken by the Assembly in collaboration with relevant departments
  • Provides technical oversight to ensure projects meet required standards and specifications

Role in Accountability and Service Delivery

Through infrastructure development, maintenance, and technical supervision, the Works Department promotes safety, functionality, and efficient service delivery across the Municipality.
