Department of Transport
The Department of Transport supports the Assembly in the formulation and implementation of transport-related policies and services within the Municipality, in line with national transport policies and regulations. The Department works to promote safe, orderly, and efficient transport systems for residents and road users.
Core Responsibilities
The Department of Transport performs the following key functions:
Policy Advisory and Regulation
- Advises the Assembly on matters relating to transport services within the Municipality
- Recommends the prohibition or restriction of the movement of general or specified vehicles on designated roads or directions where necessary
Public Transport Control and Compliance
- Regulates the use and conduct of public vehicles on roads and in public places in accordance with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority Act, 1999 (Act 569) and related regulations
- Ensures compliance with approved transport standards and operational guidelines
Transport Infrastructure and Facilities
- Establishes, maintains, and controls motor parks and other vehicle parks within the Municipality
Vehicle Identification and Records
- Provides for the identification of licensed vehicles operating within the Municipality
- Maintains records of classified contractors and consultants in the transport services industry
Role in Accountability and Service Delivery
Through regulation, monitoring, and advisory services, the Department of Transport promotes road safety, orderly transport operations, and improved service delivery across the Municipality.
