EASTERN REGIONAL PEACE COUNCIL COLLABORATES WITH YKMA TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY OF PEACE AND DISARMAMENT
On Thursday, 28th May, 2026, the Eastern Regional Peace Council(ERPC) collaborated with the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly(YKMA) to celebrate the international women’s day of peace and disarmament, dubbed, From Inclusion to impact: women leading peace and local governance. The celebration centered on the critical roles women play in peacebuilding, leadership, mediation, and community development when they are given support.
The Chairman of the Eastern Regional Peace Council(ERPC), Dr. Mark Boadu, underscored the pivotal roles women play in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and local governance and therefore encouraged the residents to embark on active community participation to positively impact their communities and Ghana as a whole.
The Guest of Honour, Dr. Gloria Sarku Kumawu, Deputy Clerk to the Parliament of Ghana, paid homage to industrious women from Eastern region who served Ghana wholeheartedly for their impacts to be felt nationwide and therefore encouraged the women present to use them as their role models. Additionally, she acknowledged the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, for her impact in conflict resolution in some districts in the region.
Dr. Gloria Sarku Kumawu stated that women need a chance to complement men for the work they do but not to compete them. She refuted the claim that women empowerment is tantamount to competition with men.
She bemoaned cultural stereotyping where men are always chosen over women to chair events. She added that gender-based discrimination should be eschewed completely for women to participate in all walks of life. She advocated for adequate resources after the inclusion of women to facilitate the positive impact. In concluding her remarks, she appealed to the Eastern Regional Peace Council for more grooming and mentorship programmes for women in the region.
The Eastern Regional Peace Council presented an award to Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly for its key contribution towards peace. The Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, received the award on behalf of the Assembly and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the peace council. Hon. Akumatey called for collective efforts for peace and unity to reign to facilitate the development of the Municipality.
