YILO KROBO MUNICIPALITY LAUNCHES “TREE FOR LIFE” PROGRAMME TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE -SOMANYA

June 5, 2026 — In commemoration of World Environment Day, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly (YKMA) and the Forestry Services Division have officially launched the 2026 Tree for Life Programme. This year’s initiative is running under the theme “Forest and Economy,” focusing on how healthy forests drive national development, create jobs, and protect vital ecosystems.

The launch brought together key stakeholders, including Hon. Edwin Yao Tengey (Presiding Member of YKMA, representing the Municipal Chief Executive); Mr. Albert Fiifi Amakye, Municipal Finance Officer; officials from the Ghana Education Service; and students of Yilo Krobo Senior High School (YIKROSEC).

Speaking at the event, District Forestry Manager Madam Fosua Offei emphasized that tree planting is a critical defense against Ghana’s worsening flood risks. Reminding students of the proverb, “When the last tree dies, the last man dies,” she urged the youth to take personal responsibility for the saplings.

While the national goal is to plant 30 million trees this June, Somanya Range Manager Madam Hilda Kwara revealed that the Yilo Krobo Municipality has been tasked with planting 140,000 trees.

Free seedlings are currently available to the public at the Forestry Services Division District Office. The Assembly emphasizes that the project’s success will not be measured by how many saplings are distributed, but by how many are successfully nurtured into maturity.
