DAY 5 OF MCE’s ANNUAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EXERCISE – SOMANYA ZONAL COUNCIL
On Thursday, 9th October 2025, Assembly Members and residents under the Somanya Zonal Council gathered at the Apostolic Church of Ghana, Somanya to warmly welcome the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly (YKMA), Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, together with his team of seasoned technocrats led by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Abdul Hussein A. Rasheed.
In his opening remarks, Hon. Akumatey expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Assembly Members for their continuous support since his appointment and confirmation as MCE. He emphasized that community engagement remains a cornerstone of participatory governance—promoting inclusiveness, transparency, and dialogue on key developmental issues across the Municipality.
📊 Presentation on Development Projects
The Municipal Development Planning Officer, Mr. Adu Kwabena, highlighted major projects completed under the 2022–2025 Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP), including:
Construction of community centre at Nkurakan
Provision of 8 boreholes across various communities
12-seater toilet facilities at Gbekormanya and Plau
Akutunya warehouse and Somanya slaughterhouse
Market sheds at Akutunya
Reshaping of Bosotwi–Akpo road (4km)
CHPS compound with mechanized borehole at Aketebour
Distribution of 418 dual desks to schools
He also outlined projects under the 2026–2029 MTDP, acknowledging Hon. Seth Tekper for his role in lobbying several GETFund projects, including new facilities for UESD, Yilo Krobo SHS, Somanya Presby JHS, Sra Presby, Klo-Agogo SHS, and Aboabo Basic School.
For 2026, the Assembly plans to:
Extend electricity to Tsremanti Dornguanor
Rehabilitate roads
Construct, renovate, and furnish classroom blocks
Procure and distribute furniture for schools
Construct and mechanize 10 boreholes with water treatment systems and overhead tanks
🗣 Community Concerns & Responses
During the interactive session, residents raised several issues, and the following key updates were shared:
ECG Metering: Residents advised to contact the Assembly for official letters before submitting requests for additional prepaid meters.
Auto Rickshaw (Pragyia) Operations: MCE clarified that no ban has been placed; rather, the Assembly is working with transport unions and the Police to regulate operations and decongest key areas.
Road Conditions: Urban Roads Department confirmed plans for a 10km inner-road project in Somanya, including ECG Junction–YIKROSEC.
Health Services: The Municipal Health Director addressed concerns on charges and mortality rates, advising residents to seek early medical attention and always request receipts.
Street Lighting: Assembly Members were tasked to report faulty streetlights for prompt repairs.
Waste Management: Regular offloading of waste containers at Sabi School, Agavenya, to be ensured.
Road Layouts: The Physical Planning Officer urged residents to cooperate and observe the required 10ft road reservation during land development.
Public Toilet at Koledjen: The broken septic tank will be renovated, and households encouraged to construct their own toilet facilities.
Additionally, Mr. Christopher Teila (Deputy Director) reminded residents that marriage registration services are available at YKMA.
In closing, the MCE commended the Somanya Zonal Council Chairperson, Assembly Members, and community members for their active participation, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to inclusive local governance and sustainable development.
