YKMA COLLABORATES WITH DISTRICT POLICE COMMAND TO ENFORCE DECISIONS MADE ON COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT AND PRAGYIA OPERATIONS IN SOMANYA

On Monday, 8th September, 2025, the management of YKMA led by the Municipal Chief Executive(MCE), Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, the Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mr. Abdul Hussein A. Rasheed, Deputy Director, Mr. Christopher Teila, Mr. Kwabena Adu, the Municipal Planning Officer together with the Somanya District Police Commander, Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa and Chief Inspector Richard Sarpong in charge of MTTD met with the leadership of all transport unions and Auto rickshaw(Pragyia) riders regarding commercial transport and pragyia operations within the Municipality and also to make the Akutunya main station fully operational.
During the meeting held on 8th September, 2025, it was agreed that to decongest Somanya roundabout and stop unauthorized loading of passengers to make Akutunya Main station fully functional, the following decisions were reached for strict compliance commencing on Monday, 15th September, 2025 :
☑No auto rickshaw(pragyia) or commercial vehicle would be allowed to pack and load around the precinct of Somanya roundabout.
☑ Pragyia would not been allowed to operate beyond DVLA and the University(UESD)
☑Commercial vehicles loading to Klo-Agogo, Ashaiman, Tema, Akuse, and Asutsuare at the Taxi rank would revert to the Akutunya main lorry station.
☑ All commercial vehicles and Auto Rickshaw are to offload passengers and goods at the taxi station and not roundabout.
☑Loading points at Taxi rank and Akutunya Main station would be allocated to Pragyia riders.
☑Taxi and commercial vehicles would not be allowed to park and load at Trom junction.
☑A spot fine of Two Hundred Cedis(GHS 200) would be imposed on offenders and money paid at the Municipal Assembly Finance Office.
☑A task force made up of Officers from the District Police Command, the Municipal Assembly, and the various transport unions would be constituted to enforce all decisions.
On Monday, 15th September, 2025, being the first day of the enforcement of the decisions, the management of YKMA together with the District Commander and his team went to Trom junction, Roundabout, Taxi rank and Akutunya main station to monitor compliance by the unions. It was observed that loading points had been given to the Pragyia riders at both the Taxi rank and the Akutunya Main station. The feedback gathered from the taskforce positioned at vantage point was positive regarding the compliance. The Police Commander, Superintendent Abrokwa and the management of YKMA led by Hon. Akumatey took time and explained the benefits of the enforcement of the decisions to both the commercial vehicle drivers and the Auto Rickshaw riders .The YKMA management and the District Police Command took notice of the challenges the riders and the drivers had faced as first day of the implementation of the decisions and assured them of providing lasting solutions to beautify and develop Somanya.
