YKMA DISTRIBUTES SUPPORT ITEMS TO 74 PWDs
On Tuesday, 13th January, 2026, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly(YKMA) through the Social Welfare and Community Development Department distributed start-up kits and capital to seventy-four(74) Persons Living With Disabilities(PWDs) in the Municipality. To promote self-reliance and economic empowerment, a total of thirty-one(31) PWDs received start-up kits
such as Chest Freezers, polytanks, Industrial sewing machines, fufu machines, bags of gari,bags of charcoal, among others. Eleven(11) beneficiaries received start-up capital. Other categories of benefits include educational support, medical support, and Provision of Assistive Devices.
The Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo Constituency, Hon. Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, graced the occasion and pleaded with all the beneficiaries to use the start-up kits and capital for intended purposes to empower themselves economically.
The Municipal Chief Executive(MCE) of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly(YKMA), Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, commended the government for increasing the Disability Common Fund(DCF) from 3% to 5%. He advised the beneficiaries not to equate their disabilities as inability. He emphasized that the selection of beneficiaries was done without malice and therefore pleaded with other PWDs in the Municipality who were not beneficiaries today that they will also benefit in the subsequent years.
The Municipal Director of Social Welfare and Community Development Department, Madam Na-Afua Woyram Tettey, highlighted the fair, transparent,and non-partisan approach adopted as beneficiaries were identified through applications, followed by thorough assessment by officers, and finally approved by Disability Fund Management Committee. She admonished the beneficiaries not to sell the items as supervisors will routinely visit them to inspect the items. She also encouraged the beneficiaries to use the items and the capital for their intended purposes so that these benefits will make them live independently and bridge the gap that limit their participations in the society.
The President of Ghana Federation of Disability(GFD) in the Municipality, Madam Vida Awaitey, urged all persons living with disabilities in the Municipality to join the association. On behalf of the beneficiaries, she expressed her profound gratitude to the government, the MP, and the Municipality.
